  • I am surprised the company took 6 weeks to contact you though

The last payment received by the central heating company was in June 2007 & they called JulieLD 2 weeks ago about the situation. That's 7 months!

6 weeks would be bad enough not to notice but, it was 6 months

Have to agree with amandathepanda. Why did you choose a standing order and not a direct debit?

Maybe the supplier is not a member of the direct debit scheme. Standing orders are in my opinion far safer, as the customer is in control. With a direct debit, you are signing away authority to debit your account by any amount at any time. Remember the problem a while back with one of the banks incorrectly claiming customers mortgage payments?

Banks are totally incompetent and should be closely watched by customers. They lie and cheat, mislead their customers and have a total disregard for the consumer. As Martin has said we are in an adversarial position, its them and us. Do not trust them and check and question their every move.

Well that would be unusual wouldn't it?

The direct debit is controlled by the company not the bank and there is the direct debit guarantee scheme for when things do go wrong - you can cancel direct debits, just as you can a standing order and yes , while you are quite correct to state that you are in control of standing orders this is not the best position to always be in, as demonstrated by the OP.

Thankfully I am not in the paranoia zone with regard to banks - most companies are incompetent - it's just that we have to rely on banks to look after our money which is a pretty important of most of our lives.

Lucky old you! Clearly you have not suffered at the hands of these incompetent morons. Banks (and a lot of the large companies we rely on also) surround themselves with a shield of incompetence which is endemic in today's consumer society. I am not the only one to suffer these fools, there are a plethora of people in similar positions on this very site. Banks screw up every single day and then distance them selves from their actions at the very sign of trouble.

As an indication of the exact mentality, a fellow member of this board who works in the banking profession was incorrectly advising folk that they are not covered by Visa when paying by debit card for refunds in the instance of a failed airline. This advice was incorrect and poorly researched. The very people who are the custodians of our wealth are poorly trained, poorly motivated and poorly rewarded. The same in virtually every large corporation.

Hence why none can be trusted and they all have to be questioned and held accountable for their oft inept service.

It is more than fair to say in this case the OP should accept some responsibility for not monitoring their account properly to see that this item was not being paid, but similarly a bank should have a degree of accountability for not following a written instruction. After all, you could almost train a chimp to do it!

It is not paranoia, more an indication of the level of service that we are expected to tolerate with increasing frequency.

  • in 2005 i had a standing order with natwest set up to pay my rent of £235 every month to the estate agents i was with at the time, on the 1st of march that year i had unsufficient funds in my acount to pay at that time although i had put the right amount in that same day and i now understand it was not payed for the remainder of my tenacy, another 4 months. to cut a long story short, now over 2 years later the estate agents have conatcted my parents as garantors claiming i owe them around £800 and will apparently take us to court.
 I know i should have checked my account but Is there anything i can do? is it Natwest fault for not paying it? my fault for not checking and sorting it out myself? or the estate agents fault for not seeking the money earlier?
    Thankyou

The fact that you didnt notice if your rent was paid for 5 months tells me you shouldnt be trusted out on your own , let alone living on your own

    Its YOUR fault

Mike h Putting the money in the account the same day as the standing order was due out was a day too late as I keep on having to post on MSE. You need money there the day before the payment is due, with almost all banks, for it to be paid.
