School Easter Holiday not at Easter! Watch Out!

I don't know if this is all over the country this year but here in Croydon the usual Easter holiday for schools is not going to be at Easter. My friend has a holiday booked for the two weeks after Easter as usual and has just noticed that apart from Good Friday and Easter Monday there is no Easter Holiday. Instead it is now called Spring Break and is two weeks later, Monday 7th April - Friday 18th April.

Just thought that I'd mention it incase a similar thing is happening in other places and people haven't realised.

Depends where you are. In Dudley Borough Easter holidays are March 20th to April 8th.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Spring holiday : Mon 7 Apr - Fri 18 Apri
  • A significant percentage of LAs in the south east corner of England have changed to a 6 term year and it's now in its 3rd year .Only this year has the change dawned on some parents as Easter this year falls outside the 2 week break (last 2 years it gell during the 2 week break). Term dates are published by LAs up to 2 years in advance.

Doesn't just affect the six week term schools - we don't fall into that in N lincs but our hols are two weeks commencing 05.04, Doncaster are actually at Easter.

    what's a 6 term year? Doesn't everywhere have that anyway 3 full terms Sept-Dec, Jan-Easter, Easter-Jul all seperated by a 1/2 term week. (Oct,Feb,May)

We finish here for Easter on Thurs 20 March and go back Mon April 7th.

Thanks for your link Bernadette. I've been trying to find out the dates for the academic year 09/10 for some time as I think this is likely to be a 7 week summer school holiday.
  • This has come over from ..you've guessed it......The USA, where it's also called "Spring break".

Over there the state (i.e. schools) and religion are kept totally separate, unlike here, so school holidays are not tied to religious festivals like Easter. You would never see your child in a school nativity play in the USA unless you opted for a private Christian school.

At least the dates won't change much in future!

Simple really, more but shorter terms separated by two week breaks, except that the main summer break will be longer (but not as long as now). Half term ceases to exist.

All this was being spoken about when I was last involved in School Transport, and that was over 5 years ago; but it is a shame the LA's cannot get there collective act together and agree the same dates, especially in areas where students swap LA's due to odd home geography.

Norfolk schools two week holidays cover the easter weekend starting march 20th

Maybe the OP should change the title because it reads that all schools are not having holidays at easter but that clearly isnt the case.

Hi only good thing about the school hols being after easter is that holiday brochures will have assumed kids off over easter so there prices will actually be cheap in the 2 weeks kids are off and easter weeks will be the high price, so should get some bargains out there.
