Faulty jeans have ripped my leather sofa!

Options
Hi, I am after a little advice please.

I bought a pair of jeans for myself from a very popular clothing chains clearance store a couple of weeks ago.
I was wearing them yesterday and was sat on the sofa with my legs curled up next to me.When I went to get up and I swung my legs down there is a 2 and a half inch tear in the sofa!!!!!!! Looking at the jeans there is a ruddy 8-9 mm pin/screw sticking out the side of the jeans at about calf level. My dh then found a metal button on the sofa that had come off the pin/screw. ( the button is so you can roll up bottom of jeans and attach to make cropped jeans)
How dangerous is that???? It is soooooooo sharp and just ripped straight through the sofa. How can they use these in clothes? What makes me really cross is my little girl had been jumping around on moments before and it would've seriously hurt her had she sat on it!!!

Anyway, I've just got in from work and I'm not sure whether to take offending items and a pic of sofa to store or do i call HO???
How do i deal with this?

Thanks.

I think most jeans buttons are designed like that, Ive had a few pop off over the years.

I dont know what to advise really, its a bit of a "one in a million chance" situation. I dont think it would hurt to contact the retailer and see what they say, but whether they would take any responsibility for the sofa is another matter entirely. Just my opinion but I think the most you would get is a refund on the jeans.
    Good luck!

To my mind, it would depend on where I had bought the jeans and how much I had spent on them as to the quality I expect from them. I agree that there shoudln't be anything sharp in there, but if it has actualy broken and is not part of the design, it would depend on how often that could be expected to happen as to whether they would take it further.
  • Thanks guys, they were bought 2 weeks ago from a reputable (IMO) retailer.
The button used to hold up the bottom of the jeans when you roll them up came off ( unbeknown to me at the time) and the sharp screw is what had been holding the button onto the jeans, this is what was poking out of the side of the jeans.

I think it is worth contacting the retailer - they may have had a faulty batch, and if you don't then you'll never know what they may have suggested! Do you have accidental damage cover (worth having when you have children IMHO - paint on carpets etc) included in your contents insurance? This would probably cover incidents like this if you get no joy from the retailer.

  • I have just contacted HO and they've asked me to take them into any one of their stores who will then send them on to HO.I have taken pics of the jeans and sofa etc recorded style/serial number for reference.
    I take them down tomorrow.

I've only had a button pop off once (very sharp pin!) and they were from Top Shop, but were also a couple of years old, so I wasn't so bothered. Given the sharpness of the pin, it's really not something you'd expect to happen, otherwise they'd have a much safer design, and the H&S requirements would be stricter.

I'd give them a deadline to deal with the issue, then if you don't get a satisfactory response, then write to the managing director, with print outs of the photo, and point out that it could have been your daughter's skin, not just a sofa!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
