Question regaring Carers Allowance

Options
Currently my wife is entitled to carers allowance due to myself being disabled. Our daughter has been recently classed as disabled for Aspergers. We know that she (my wife) is only able to claim CA for one person. Is there any rule that says I could not apply for CA for my daughter? we both look after her so even though I am myself disabled would I be able to apply for CA?

Many thanks for your replies.

I'm not sure but I know in a couple partner A can claim CA for the partner B and partner B can claim CA for partner A. So I would assume you probably could.

Yes you can, being disabled does not mean you can't care for someone, even if you need a certain level of care yourself. As long as your daughter gets DLA middle/higher rate care component, get that carers allowance form in ASAP.

Thanks for that Hapless. I did have a feeling I may of been entitled to claim for it but I wasn't 100% sure.

You are entitled to claim for it as Hapless mentioned, if you receive Incapacity Benefit or certain other benefits you will not receive it paid to you but will get the NI credits. There is a premium for income support if you are entitled even if you don't receive it paid to you. However I must mention a recent case where a friend of mine has been taken off her disability benefits (DLA and Incapacity) after claiming Carers Allowance. She is fighting it via appeal but the evidence they used to state she should not be entitled to them is that she claimed Carers Allowance and managing to provide a caring role. I am not saying do not apply, just to be careful as according to her Welfare Rights officer who is helping with this it is happening more and more often.
One day I might be more organised...........

I know of a similar case but the DWP backed down as she said the DDA would not stop her taking a paid job as a carer in their situation so getting carers allowance should be no different.

Hi thanks for the replies. We contacted somebody yesterday (Friday) who informed us that we would be able to claim CA. The only thing now putting me off is the facts that aswell as getting DLA I also get Incapacity Benefit. I don't really want them to give us one thing and then take another thing away. We are being sent the forms to fill in, is it worth us filling the forms in and sending them back?

although you wouldn't recieve the ca in monetry terms, as you would still recieve your ib. you would still get underlying entittlement which would entitle you to the premiums in other means tested benifit.
so you could still find yourself better off financialy.
