Hello, I need a new stair / passage carpet and to try and keep cost's down I want to just carpet the treads- will paint the vertical pat of stair with some kind of gloss. Has anyone done this before? Is it even do-able? My carpet fitter coming out on Sat for quote and feel, it will be a lot harder/trickier for him than just laying the carpet straight down. Anyone got any advice on how this can be done, if it can be done, what would the reasnoble cost be? Thankyou all. ps. had just wanted to paint stairs but worried my dog would fall down them....

It's been a few years since I've sold and fitted carpets but this is still viable.
If you can choose a carpet that comes in several widths then you can choose the one that is right for you and you can then cut to the size you want and have it sent off to have the edges whipped (just like they do around rugs) to prevent the edges from fraying and this then gives you a stair runner which can be fixed in the normal way.
Hope this is of help.0 -
The labour costs on that would be silly. They'd have the stairs done properly in no time. Just keep your eye out for suitable remnants at the carpet shop.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Mmmmmm..........I misread the OP and my suggestion for the runner would have covered the vertical parts (risers) too so apologies.0

i fitted a stair like this a few weeks ago and its very time consuming. each piece of carpet has to be tacked under the lip of each step . my electric stapler wouldn't fit so had to use small tacks , about 15 tacks a step times 24 steps. took ages and was quite pricey too. if you had the patience you could do it yourself ,it really isn't hard to do0

My friendly local carpet fitter is charging me £35:beer: , and is getting the carpet cost price.:j :j Its funny, some tradespeople come out see a young householder and think , she must be minted, they charge silly money:mad: , then some come out and take pity on me and give me a top price.:p Apparently it involves tacking carpet over the "nose" which although isn't hard, its time consuming. Woo, only problem is, do I gloss or varnish the verticals?!RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.
