Colours run on brand new duvet set

I recently bought a complete bed set from Marshall Ward in their Sale. I bought a king size duvet set (including box valance sheet), 2 sets of curtains and a bespread. I love it.

However, I have washed the duvet set and valance sheet for the first time this weekend and the dark colours have caused the cream background to go a murky brown with a big red patch on one pillowcase. I followed the washing instructions to the letter.

I rang Marshall Ward and there are no more in stock (although I was a bit concerned about washing a replacement anyway). They said I can either return it - but not the bedspread as it has been used and nothing wrong with it (although i haven't washed that yet) - or they would give me a discount of ......... 72p!

I asked for time to think. The trouble bought the whole set and really like it, but don't really want to be left with just the bedspread. Curtains are unopened as yet so could go back. I can still use the duvet set but obviously it doesn't look as nice. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? I think really they should refund the bedspread too.

Thats bad, can you not wash it all together and hope it all runs?? Then get a full refund. Abit dishonest but 72p is a joke!
You may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
    You just keep on walking

Washing the bedspread is worth a try. Either that or just take the refund on the duvet cover, keep the bedspread and the curtains (as presumably these match) and just keep your eyes peeled for a plain/different duvet cover that will compliment the curtains and bedspread. Wash the bedspread before you do anything else though - you don't want to keep it and find out a year down the line that this runs, too.

You'll have to wash it all at some point, so you may as well do it now, to see if it does run.

Maybe I've imagined it, but are there special laundry products for sale that can help clean up dyed washing. Perhaps these are only for use beforehand, in case the clothes in a mixed wash dye.

    Worth a look though.

Having second thoughts now that perhaps these are only a form of bleach for use on whites that have dyed. Anyway, you may see something.

I googled colour run and found this site

Scroll down a bit and it has a tip for colours that have run.

    Thanks everybody for your help.

Kill Bill - they did offer me a refund, but not on the bedspread as it has been used/not damaged.

davetrousers - looked at the site - very helpful and will be buying some of the colour catcher next time I do my shopping. It sounds like just the thing I need.

    Thanks again everyone.

Hope you find something to help, but if you do buy anything, read it carefully to make sure it's not simply going to bleach your linen. I'd hate it to turn into various shades of white.
