Plumber Bath Tap measurement.

Hi,
my coldwater bath tap decided to fall apart on me this morning looks very similar to this one
I have seen some tap tops and bodies adapt a tap you can apparently screw straight in but I need to know the measurement they say either half or three quarter inch where do you measure this please?
Basically it is the screw on cover that sits over the tap spindle that screws into the uprights of the tap pipe body that comes up from the surface of the bath the screw on cover has broken it's thread so when you try to turn the tap off it just pushes out of where it screws into and the tap won't turn off properly.
Any help would be great!
Cheers!

If you have a problem fix it, if you can't fix it don't worry because it will happen anyway!
