weird phone calls via BT landline anyone else?

i had a problem with landline week before last around tea time..................

phone rang "hello" says i
"hello" says other person. "why did you ring me then who is this" etc.

Some weird fault was ringing people at the same time.! i spoke to a chap in abingdon who had had the problem all day and had complained to BT already. Some chap in hampshire twice who was convinced i had rung him and it was some elabourate set up by his mates. He was getting seriously flirty as he thought it was a great joke by his friends and i must be up for something to have rung him eeeeeek. I had to put the phone down on him he would not beleive i had not rung him.

I rang bt and complained but they passed me to 3 different departments and said is not a fault on the line etc they know nothing. They had the local exchange ring me and i said it had not happened again was happy to think it was just because it had been windy and was some werid fault.

Its happened 2 or 3 times since that evening.

Early hours of this morning it started it again :(

My phone rang at 1.23 am and woke me up no one there. next tiime 2 second delay then dial tone.
. So i started downstairs to unconnecct all the phones it rang twice more i ended up speaking to a taxi firm convinced i was ringing them. Not impressed. My broadband connection has gone 10 times in last 24hrs also saying error message 5hundred and something no dial tone. I pick up phone it has dial tone arrrghhhhhhhhh!. This is riduculous. I will ring bt later when i have calmed down abit. It really worried me to get a phone call that late you think someone has died. Took me 2 hours to drop off to sleep again icon_sad.gif.

Anyone else had anything similar happen to them?

To summarize phone rings you answer same time as someone else has heard their phone ringing. You both think the other person has rung you but neither of you made the call! 1471 says we do not have the callers number to return the call (always checked with all of the calls).

ps i am in west oxfordshire

i have now been told its 3 way call activated by someone with voipe and they cannot trace it. iI will have to change my landline number if it happens again bt have said this will be free so i guess they have no way of stopping this person at present!. I thought i would update so if this happens to anyone else just get straight in touch with bt's Nuisance call bureau do not let them fob you off its a known problem now.

thanks this has been happening to me but as I have fallen out with someone a now ex friend I thought it was them as it seems to happen when he has peed me off and I tell said person to foxtrot oscar then the phone calls start then if I happen to start speaking to said person again they stop...they are mostly international and I do have caller display but my internet has been going all over the place as well...so maybe I'll give them a ring and see what happens...thanks again:Dspooky..

Its happened again once but i did not even speak just replaced the handset i think ignoring them is the way to go fingers crossed i really do not want to have to change my phone number. They also said something about voipe and international coming up as 0 thats all they could say we can only see a 0.

This happened to me a few years ago - all you can do is report it to 151 and they will eventually find an engineer who recognises the problem and can fix it.

From memory, it was an exchange fault of some kind.

this might sound daft but check bt 1571 cos someone might have sent a text to your landline which would cause it to ring and show a number withheld, or even that you've had a call from your own phone number.
we had calls in the middle of the night and were starting to think house was haunted but it turned out to be a text trying to get through!
no idea how you have ended up speaking to that bloke though.

They ruled out a crossed line, they ruled out the exchange having a fault, they know its not a fault its someone doing this on purpose using voipe 3 way calling to connect 2 totally unconnected callers so they can listen in and get their kicks while we want to know why a stranger has just rang us. It usually happens 3-5 times in a row over 15 minutes ish at tea time or late at night. Someone connecting me to a taxi firm at 1.30am now there is no way thats a text message or a crossed line. BT could tell it was done something to do with voipe showing as a zero they could see my number and other connecting with this zero. I rarely use my landline so it was easy for them to see what was happening.
