Bristol Airport and trains....

(Also posted this on the trains thread - unsure which one for best!)

I have booked a flight from Tenerife returning to Bristol at 20:40 on Friday 15th February. I will need to get back to Shrewsbury, and looking for the cheapest option.

The nearest train station to the airport is Bristol Temple Meads, but there is a shuttle bus from the airport which takes about 20-30 mins. The whole journey will take about 4 hours and get me home at 3am the next morning. This costs £38.80 for an open ticket (there are two of us travelling).

Or there is a train from Bristol Parkway at 21:42, and I think a taxi is about £30 and the tickets are £15 in advance. Only problem is, what happens if there is a delay? An open ticket is £33.80 each.

I have also priced up a taxi door to door, which is £90.

Any other suggestions as to what I can do? I had thought about getting a cheap hotel room overnight but only looked at Travelodge so far, and that is £61 for a room!

Maybe see how much it would cost to hire a car for a one-way trip like that? You may find that it is about the same price or less and will give you the flexibility you need.

If you'd consider private "taxi" PM me, I could probably take you up there a little cheaper and be flexible with your times, then use it to take a 1-day break too.

I live near Bristol Parkway and I have to say even with a taxi to get from Bristol Airport in an hour is rather pushing it.

Especially as 20:40 is presumably when the flight should land, then you've got to wait to clear immigration and get your bags back. Considering it'll cost you £60 (taxi + 2x£15 fare), it would be far wiser to get the open tickets at £38.80 each - only £17.60 more and you're not tied to a specific train.
