Help with slow cooked lamb cooking times

Sorry if this is in the wrong place didn't know where else to post it.

I bought a leg of Lamb from Somerfield half price and it is 4.25kg
What temp and time do I put it on at(Gas oven)to slow roast it?
I have never cooked lamb before, and it is a monster joint for DD and I to eat, would also appreciate tips as to what to do with the rest of it.
Thanks

I put it in the oven over night on the "S" setting on a gas oven (8-9 hours). Make sure it is well wrapped in foil as if it leaks lots it will dry out. Put some oil, salt, pepper and rosemary if you have it.

I am not sure what temperature the "S" setting is for an electric oven.

It will survive a longer cooking time as long as it is wrapped correctly.

Depends on how well you want it done. From my trusty Americam meat cooking guide (and it's never failed me yet)...

    Lamb, leg, bone in...

7-9 lbs (And your 4.5 kilos is about 10 lbs)

    Oven temp 325F (Gas 3)

Rare - 15-20 mins per pound

Med - 20-25 mins per pound

Well - 25-30 mins per pound

  • Thanks for that, but I need to eat it tonight for dinner and don't have 8-9 hours:D though I may try the overnight cooking another time if I like todays results.

I really am a novice at Lamb.I don't even know if I like it,when I have had it before(never cooked it myself) I haven't liked it and found it tough and fatty.

I looked it up and could only find timings for a leg half the weight, and didn't know if I should just double the timings:confused:

Leftover lamb can be done as I use leftover beef. Get a frying pan and fry some onions. Add gravy and heat through. Add meat and heat through (slowly). Service with mash n veggies - YUMMY!

    So how was it?

A bit late in replying:o but it was lovely and tender.
I put some of it in ,with left over veg and potatoes the next day and made a stew.

I was surprised how much it shrank:eek:

To be honest Lamb isn't for me,daughter liked it but wasn't keen on it.
It was cooked to perfection and wasn't fatty or tough like I have had in the past.

I was glad to confirm to myself that I don't really like Lamb,I am pleased I cooked it for the first(and last)time.

Having a lovely chicken for tommorrow,I know I love that:D

I am getting rather addicted to this board, and have made a meal plan for the next two weeks for the first time ever:o

    Thanks for everyones help.
