Royal Mail - How Long should I wait for compo claim

About 5 weeks ago I sent off a compensation claim to Royal Mail along with a certificate of posting (My only copy as my scanner was broken at the time).
They've still not replied, so how long should I allow. I suppose it will be pointless now with no C-O-P.
It looks like they have lost the claim as well as the orginal item, the donuts!!
To be fair they are pretty reliable, from my experience it's about 1 in 40 items sent that they lose. And the hard working posties arn't to blame - a mate of mine works for them, says they (posties) are totally unappreciated and "treated like s***"
