Dangerous Kettle recall Russell Hobbs

If this has been posted elsewhere I apologise - can't see it!

We had a Russell Hobbs Glass Lid Kettle (10789) and hubby was using it recently and had just boiled it and was about to pour it in the teapot and the handle broke off!

The boiling water went everywhere and the kettle fell to the floor and hubby was left just holding the handle! He was very lucky because he still had his outdoor clothes on - imagine if you'd just got up and only had a pair of shorts on!! Or if a child or pet had been close by.

It cracked a tile on the floor and broke some china mugs as it fell and the boiling water was all over the worktop.

We contacted R Hobbs and there was a product recall on this item but we were not aware of this. We have now returned it to R Hobbs (as instructed) and are waiting to see what happens but in the meantime we have had to buy a new kettle.

If you have one, check their site to see if yours is a faulty one. Having said that they say check the oval sticker on base but ours fell off not long after we had it. PLEASE CHECK - IT'S VERY DANGEROUS!!

Just found out my Dad was scalded 2 weeks ago by exactly the same thing. Thank god, non of the kids were in reach. They even have extended warranty on the kettle, so someone somwehere knows that they have that model, but haven't bothered to get in touch with them. Absolute disgusting service from Russell Hobbs or Comet - whoever the cover is with is negligent in my book!

Mookybargirl - sorry to hear about your Dad! Hope he's OK now.

Like I said, my hubby had a real near miss so I thought I'd better warn people.

I am sure i saw something about this on a tv programme,in relation to companies who refuse to recall items. I think they had numerous complaints but still kept selling it.

Edit-it was featured on Watchdog who tested them. The company were ordered to recall them by Trading Standards after being approached by Watchdog.
The offending kettles have the code 0531M to 0621M ( sticker should be on the base of the kettle)and are Not marked with a green dot.

Hi, just read this. I have that kettle, but it does not have oval sticker, and the four digit number is 0516. No green dot or M. Is this a safe one?
