Thanks for all the good advice... just thought I'd give an update as to what has happened in the office, well, things are much better now, I have spoken to this women in the presence of my line manager and his line manager. Basically I asked her to stop spreading stories unless she's 100% sure they are true and unless she know what teh consequences will be of spreading these kind of things around an office environment. i also said that it affects my work and makes me unhappy. She basicaly denied that any of these rumours were coming from her, but I gave her some examples and she must know that I know it was her, yet she still denied being the root of it all, even though she couldnt defend herself when I told her what people have said to me and the evidence that I have poits towards her. Basically its been much better in the office, she has been going out of her way to be nice to me?! i think that the outcome of all this is that she now knows that unlike some of the other people in the office, I will not lie down and let her walk all over me, and this is the only result i wanted. although i also got hold of our company policy on harrasment and bullying, and as far as they are concerned, what i have done is an informal complaint and the first step to a formal complaint... in case things ever get worse in future. thanks again for all the help!!!

That's the spirit White rabbit! what did i tell ya. These people know they are on thin ice when cornered. I know cos I've been in your shoes, you have the law on your side. So proud of you , nowt like plain speaking eh. Thing is they now could turn on someone else, but make co workers aware that ignoring another being bullied is against any employment bullying policy as well. Well done.:T :j
