A sound and worthy trader or contractor would not need advance payment for labour and only advance payments for materials on the biggest jobs. If you're careful about your selection process this won't even come up.
Not sure many tradesmen would work with no money upfront,, some customers are cowboys too, and who is going to pay for the £300(for instance) materials the builder has laid out on after the customer has changed their mind??0 -
Surely, MOST builders merchants etc would take MOST of the materials back?Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.0

can you take back a window that is custom made to fit your window? Or timber cut to your spec? Its not likely, and WHY should they spend their time buying and returning stuff,, because the customer has changed their mind? If a tradesman spent three hours drawing up plans for the work you wanted done and then changed your mind on,, how does he gain back his time?
I doubt a tailor would cut you a suit without deposit, or a seamstress make you a dress unless you paid in advance for the material,!0
