Condensation and mold, stopping it?

always had a problem in the bedrooms with mould appearing above the windows. this is most likley Aggravated by the drying of clothes indoors.
had double glazing fitted which has made it worse.
i think that extra loft insulation would help (only have about 4") and making sure the insulation is fitted up to the edges of loft. as the outside edges are the coldest point so this is where condensation forms.(the old windows helped as they were very draughty)

i know that ventilation is one answer, but it seems silly to heat the house then let all the heat out.

i am planning to get the insulation in the loft increased, but this will not happen yet.

so what i am really after is a good anti-mould paint anyone could recommend.
i often have to bleach the Ceilings and re-paint but this does not last long, so want something that will last a bit longer until i can increase the insulation.

There are good tips on the above, like not drying your washing in the warmest place to avoid extra moisture in the air ;D but failing that ......................paint ;)

Neat bleach gets rid of the black mould in my bathroom and keeps it at bay for quite some time. Use gloves though and ventilate when wiping on with a sponge.
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!
  • I would say that painting over the mould only makes it look better & would guess that you need to remove the moisture.

I had a similar mould problem all over the house, to the extent where the wallpaper was getting wet & staining, Placed dehumidifiers on each floor - Problem solved.

Also put a ceiling dehumidistat in my bathroom (from screwfix direct) & vented it outside(via the loft) easy to fit & comes on whenever it needs to - No more fog in the bathroom..Hope this helps.
  • We had mould problems in our old bathroom. What we did was this.

Get some mould killer and use it one the mould to ... er... kill it.

After a couple of days wipe away all the mould, and then dry completely (use the laundrette if you have to for a week or so, if it helps).

    Re-paint with mould resistant paint.

This worked well for us, never saw any mould again. If it reappears then it usually means that there is either damp coming in from the outside or up the walls.

Otherwise, if you think it's still the internal damp that's causing it, buy a de-humidifier!

    done all these.
i think the problem is we have a cold spot on the outside edges of the roof, in that the loft insulation is not all the way to the edges, it might also be as there is ventilation gaps all along where the soffits met the roof, so if i push the insulation all the way to the edges i might cover these

I had same problem in an old terraced houses. Last Spring I bought some Kingspan (its like a foam filling with two sides of alumium foil in sheet form) and attached that to the rafters, making sure there plenty of air flow. Not sure if it works or not yet. But I turned the small loft into a kids play room. I had real problems last year and had to call enviromental health for advice.

The previous yera I had aloft grant but there company that instaleld it didnt do a very good job and like you didnt go rigt to the ends of teh roof.

Kingspan cost me £44 for 11 sheets at a builder merchants, dont think b&Q sell it.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

sometimes you just cannot stop it, it depends if the wall is facing in a certain direction and if it is an end wall etc.

Johnstones do a very good paint, approx £20 for a 5 litre tin (quite pricey).

It is a very thick textured paint and the old paint should be sanded off first, I have used it in lots of bathrooms and it has done the trick.

Do you have an extractor fan installed?

yes there is a fan in bathroom.
    also have a dehumidifier.
i think the problem is the cold spot where the vents let air in all along the roof. will have to find out if i can block these vents and maybe add extra ventilation in the roof elsewhere.
in the meantime just need a good paint.
the international one seems good, so will get some and try that.
Johnstones? any more info on this paint?
