Moving my pc/broadband....

Ok, I know this is gonna seem like a stupid question...... I want to move my pc downstairs, as atm its in the nursery, and I keep DS awake with all my MSEing..... now last time we moved it downstairs and plugged the b/band connection in, we couldn'y connect to the internet. I know the connection works because the Sky + box is plugged in there (altho when it was installed, the guy did have trouble getting it connected in the beggining), but when we plug the pc in, we get nothing.
If I wanted to run a cable from upstairs (where it is plugged in atm) would I need a special cable? And what effect would it have on my connection speed? Cable would need to be approx 10m long......
Thanks guys/girls

Its not a good idea to run your router off an extension, its best if you have to have it a distance from the PC to use a longer ethernet cable.
Problems with connections can sometimes be put down to their wiring have a read of this:-

Have you considered ethernet over mains? you could leave the router where it is, plug the adapters in and just move the pc. There's also the optio of getting a wireless router, mind the missus flatly refused to allow me to leave the router in the nursery after ds was born.0

I'm the same..... what is the diff between ethernet and mains? Sorry to ask a dumb question....'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars' - Oscar Wilde0

I often find people have moved their broadband connection and messed up the filter arrangements.
Check that every phone in the house is plugged in via an ADSL filter (also Sky boxes)
Check the connection to the PC is only via one filter
(i.e. if you have an extension phone lead feeding the computer it is getting an unfiltered phone line at one end - and then at the other end into your ADSL modem via a filter)
Ideally you shouldn't use extension leads for broadband - but my experience is that many people get away with it.0 -
Did you use an adsl filter?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I *think* so.... we got these two funny looking things with the modem.... they have to be plugged into the phone socket then the cable plugged in...... u can tell how much I know about broadband by that answer!albertross wrote: »Did you use an adsl filter?'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars' - Oscar Wilde0
