I'm completely stumped with this one and hope someonehere can help us.
After turning on the tv today, we can't get any sound from it apart from a slight hissing noise when the volume is turned up to the highest level
. The picture quality is perfect - we've tried several channels and it makes no difference to sound. We've done the obvious things such as checked connections and that it isn't muted. It is connected to a sky basic box and dvd player which were all working fine when last used yesterday. (the sky engineer set it all up last month and we've not had any problems until now.)
We know the tv is ok as the sound is fine when trying it out with a dvd. Neither manual is any help through the trouble shooting info and from what we can see, there's absolutely no reason why we can't get any sound as a result of the checks made so far.
Any suggestions will be gladly received please. (teletext works as normal)
Ok ... now something weirder has happened! Just shortly after posting this, the tv has burst into life and sound!!!!
I thought about deleting this completely, but can anyone tell me what the problem could have been should it ever happen in the future please

You tried unplugging to for a minute?"I'm not even supposed to be here today."0

Swap the (known working) scart cable from the dvd player over to the sky box.
Try using the second scart out on the sky box.
Try and see if you get sound via RF.
Do a factory reset.
Failing those, it's time to phone sky CS. You might be lucky and get one of the people who know what they're talking about. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Thanks guys!
We switched both tv and the sky box off several times but didn't try unplugging them.
I'll keep a note of this thread for future ref should I need it. I was dreading having to phone sky CS as I've hearing impairments and struggle to understand anyone whose voice I don't know on the phone ...0 -
I get this all the time.Normally a fiddle with the scart lead gets it sorted.0

I always use decent "locking" Scart leads. Her indoors used to be forever dislodging the connections while she was dusting!
Google "locking scart lead" and you'll find plenty. Don't pay more than a tenner.0 -
Thanks to all - I lose the sound on Sky TV after using the DVD player and have been switching off at the mains and removing and replacing the viewing card to get it back. Worse still, an electrician was here today testing the electrics and after he'd gone I couldn't get sound at all on the TV and none of my usual trickery would sort it. After reading your advice I took the scart out of the DVD palyer and voila, sound restored just like that! I don't know why but who cares! :j0

I have a Virgin/Telewest cable box. If Sky remote is similar, this remote has its own volume+mute buttons, check that these have not been accidently prodded, they may work independant of the regular TV remote0

Same problem with me today. The SCART lead had somehow unplugged itself a little bit, but after pushing it back in solved the problem.0
