Cancelling insurance-Car to be sold !st!!!!

Hi. Am needing a bit of advise for my Father in Law. He has just been advised that due to medical conditions that he should give up driving. His wife rang the insurance company up (Age Concern Fortis.) and they said that the policy can not be cancelled untill the car has been sold!!!!!! Mother in Law said that the car is on their driveway, so of the public road. They then said that they might be able to do something if D.V.L.A. are informed and the car is put on SORN. The insurance is paid monthly by D.Debit. Surley you can cancell a policy when you want? Any advise woul d be helpfull. Ta
Nice to save.

From an advisory point of view, they are correct to advise you that your car MUST be insured unless it is off road and SORNed.

I am unsure of whether they can prevent you cancelling, but they are probably trying to cover themselves.
i.e. if they took your instructions and then you got prosecuted for lack of insurance you might sue them for not advising you properly !!

I'm not saying that YOU personally would do this but there are people who have sued when slipping on a drink that THEY spilled or being injured by THEIR child in a shop, so every company has to be extremely careful these days against litigation.

So I would advise you to do SORN straightaway and send it by recorded delivery (70p) and keep the orange receipt.
I gave heard of people who've been fined because their SORN was "not received".
  • Maybe "cancelling policy when you want" wasnt the best way of putting it!! Its just that if told not to drive by Dr's, you would have thought that it wouldnt be to difficult to cancell. Wife and I are trying to help as, he has had a couple of minor strokes and they are of the old school type. ie. He sorted most of that out and now Mother in Law not to sure of what to do.
    Nice to save.

Personally I would wait until it is sold before cancelling the insurance.

What happens if one of the local friendly chavs decides it is the perfect car to take for a joyride and wrecks it or just fancies a spot of vandalism.

or it's handbrake fails and rolls off the driveway knocking someone over and hitting another car. Without insurance, the FIL could face significant financial loss.

Unfortunately in this day and age nowhere is that safe, my next door neighbour is in the C.I.D. when he moved in he stated that one of the reasons he had bought his house was because the area had the lowest crime rate in the town.

Last autumn we had a spate of kids removing car badges from vehicles left parked outside all night (I always garage my car), guy across the road had £400 damage to his boot as they prised the badge off with a screwdriver.
