Subscript in Excel Graphs

I'm trying to make some text subscript in the legends of graphs in Excel (e.g. turn VDS into VDS). Any ideas how? Must be missing something. Axes, titles, labels all easy to do, but the text in the legend box is being a pain and doesn't seem very flexible in its formatting.

can you highlight the specific text in the legend you want to format, right click and then format from there?

If there is no better solution overwrite the legend text with a text box - bit clumsy though

This works in my version of excel but if you have the latest version things may now be different.

Unfortunately I can't actually select the text just the text line as a whole. I've tried making it reference formatted text in a cell but it only displays the text (as it'd appear in the formula box) and doesn't copy the same formatting. It is Excel 2007.

I was hoping to avoid typing over them manually. Inserting manual text boxes is a right pain as far as messing up formatting when copying the graph to word. Also I've got something like 40 graphs to go through, each with maybe ten legend labels and each label is quite descriptive, e.g. VDS=-5V, VG=-10V>10V. Having to type all those and place them correctly over the original text will be such a pain I think I'd be better off leaving it or thinking of some other way around it. Maybe I'll have to come up with a way of rewriting it without the need for subscripts. Just throught there should be a way of getting subscripts into the legend box, especially as you seem to be able to anywhere else.
