Non standard fireplace and surround....

I'm looking at getting an electric fire to go in my fireplace, however after putting in the fire there will be a gap of about 20cm from top of fire to top of surround and 10 cm I think accross.
The fire backs that they sell are all the wrong size, is there any way to fill in gaps myself?
