Any idea?

Trying unsuccessfully to think up some ideas for the last week in August. There are going to be just 2 of us, quite a novelty. We want to go to either the peak district, penines or further north. Everything seems to be so dear, £300 to £450 for a cottage or about £600 for a short boating break. We are interested in old buildings, castles, ruins, piles of rocks and belong to English Heritage and National Trust.
Any ideas. Just worried that we will spend the whole week fighting, so used to being parents rather than a couple LOL

I am sure you have thought of this, but how's about Scotland?
The kids hollibobs end earlier and they go back to school on the the 16th August (unlike England) thus you should get a good deal.
As for castles, heck you'll be spoilt for choice, grampian alone has heaps, and your English Trust membership covers you for Scottish ones.

How about Northumberland. Several EH castles, wild unpopulated coastline, Lindisfarne, the fantastic Cragside (NT), the new garden at Alnwick and boat trips to the Farne Islands. Staying in a caravan might be cheaper than a cottage.

Good thinking. Its further north than we have been before, a new area we have not visited with the kids, loads of rocks and ruins to keep us amused. And we have started to visit gardens as well. A caravan is a good idea if there are only 2 of you, plenty of room. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'd like to recommend this site: http://www.farmstayuk.co.uk/next/uk/index.html for accommodation wherever you decide to go. It helps farmers get some extra income and I've had really good experiences. They're B&B locations mostly.
Would you consider the Dorset coast? It ticks all the right boxes except it's at the wrong end of the country0
