My new bathroom ceiling extractor is permanently on

Hi, I replaced my old fan (was a timer model) with a new ordinary model. The timer model had red, blue and yellow wires, the new one just needed live and neutral, so I have put the earth into another connector.
When I put the power on, the fan was running, so it now runs all the time - old one only came on when the light switch was on.
I have disconnected it for now - is their an easy wiring solution?
- or - do I need to buy a "timer" model fan ?

You need a timed model if you want it to run for a set period after you switch off the light.

I am assuming that you wired it up with the red wire to the live terminal and this is why it is on all the time, the red is normally permanent live.



If you just want it to come on with the light put the blue wire to neutral and then put the yellow wire to the live as the yellow should be switched live. Make sure you tape up the red wire or if you can disconnect it from the ceiling rose and then it is no longer live.

Thanks amarg, Its now working the way we want it - I hadn't realised that the yellow wire was the switched earth. I have the red earth safely tucked away in a single connector.
We didn't want a timer one, it was a nuisance if someone went to the wc in the night (and I couldn't see how to adjust it). Anyway it needed replacing as it was making a noise.
