The other day I got some OXO chicken stock cubes as I didn't really have the time to make my own stock and didn't realise that I had run out. However, I found them rather salty. Is it possible to buy a less salty stock cube? I am able to shop at Lidl, Netto, ASDA or a Tesco Metro if that makes a difference.
Thanks for any help.

Kallo do a low salt version.
Forgot to say I'm sure all the major supermarkets sell Kallo stock cubes, but unlikely at Aldi or Lidl I think!

I can't get those locally

As a workaround, if I'm using a stock cube I don't add any other salt that the recipe might call for, neither do I then put salt on the finished meal (which lots of people just do out of pure habit).
If you're making something like a curry, or a stew you can add a peeled medium potato (cut in half) and it will absorb some of the salt. Just fish it out when the meal is done.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Marigold Swiss Vegetable Bouillion is in the 'free from' section of Tesco Online, so I assume that it will be sold in the shops although it might be worth phoning your Metro to check rather than making a special journey.
The stock powder is available in a tub, which is very useful for making exactly the amount you want at a strength you like. I've got it from wholefood shops in the past and found it very good.0 -
Another recommendation for Marigold's Boullion. I add a sprinkling of it to anything like stews, casseroles and so on, just to oomph up the flavour. great stuff! You can get a reduced salt and/or vegan version as well, although the vegan version may only be available from a health food store. I've seen both the regular and reduced salt tubs in my local tesco, any big supermarket should carry it. cost is around 1.50 to 2.00 a tub, but a tub goes a long way.

a third vote for the Marigold powder

although it's vegetable, you can use it in absolutely anything, I even put it in my HM fajita powder/mix & it also makes a nice light savoury hot drink0 -

Thank you all. I think I will try the marigold one when I next go to ASDA.0

I also like marigold stock.
In one Knorr beef stock cube there is, if I read it correctly 4grms salt, obviously less when you mix it with water, just shows you have to check the ingredients though. I never use salt in cooking now, just add it to my plate.0 -
Salt is actually a natural "taste enhancer" though pre-made products do seem to go overboard on it.
I tend these days to add a small amount while cooking (unless using stock cubes) and seldom then feel the need to add more after serving up.
In fact, I've been on "low salt" for so long that I trust my body. I can go weeks not adding extra salt but every now and then, for a couple of days, I'll just feel the need for more salt. So I add it. I'm confident that my low salt usage means that I'm not adding the stuff out of sheer habit and that if my body wants more it's because it really needs more. If you see what I mean?
