Gas installation

Hi,

I wish to get gas installed at my property which is a ground floor flat in a block of which some already have gas.
National grid quoted me £550 for 6m of service - is this a fair price?
Does anyone know how much of a saving an independent gas transporter I would get for the installation? I'm guessing I could pay up to £40 or more extra per year on my gas bill for using the IGT.

Many thanks for any replies

Rich
P.S. There are actually what look like gas pipes coming into the flat but I requested to have a "live or dead" check and the man said as there were no valves on the pipes he couldn't test them and I was to just ask national grid to get a new installation.

  • Anyone have any experience of getting conncected by an independent gas transporter as opposed to by national grid? Ta
  • We had just 2 feet of pipe to connect as the gas main runs just infont of our front door. Sadly, like you, we had to use National Grid to make the connection (sonic plastic welding so no sparks!), who in turned subbed it out to Murphy's!

Took two men 30 minutes to dig the hole. They then made the hole a meter Sq so that someone else had to come and fill it:eek:

Still cost us £550! Theiving B@5t@rds!

House is warmer now with central heating!

If there are pipes coming in and you know they are gas then all you may need do is to choose one of the suppliers to fit a meter for you. This they do free of charge.

National Grid ought to be able to tell you if the pipes you saw are gas pipes. Press them further on this.

Steve, the pipes are uncapped so this means there will be no live supply to the property. NGrid will then need to lay new pipes from the main supply.

Don`t think an IGT (Independant Gas Transporter) will do this unless the pipework belongs to IGT. But Steve is right, choose your supplier and advise them the work is done or being done on a certain day and they will arrange for the meter to go in usually the following day(if plenty of notice is given). And the meter is free to be installed
