Alternative to winzip

I am running XP home edition. I seem to remember somewhere that there is included within XP home that there is an alternative to winzip included. Could any one be so kind as to explain how I open zipped files, as the trial version of winzip has expired, and in MSE fashion I don't want to pay for something where there is a free alternative!!

7-Zip is a good free zip utility that can handle just about any compression format out there.0

Winzip is incorporated in XP. Having winzip installed can cause confusion so just uninstall it. Then you can right click on a folder and you can select "extract all" from the menu. |You can also send files to "compressed folder" to make a zipped folder.0

Sorry, but Winzip is not integrated into XP. XP has an ability to treat compressed files as folders, but it is not implemented terribly well. Having a proper file compression utility will not cause 'confusion', it will just replace XP's default method of handling compressed files, whilst also handling vastly more file formats.0 -
I should have said zipping is incorporated into XP. It's confusing to XP because it won't use it (compressed folders) unless it's the default zipping program.0

Try jzip instead. It's based on 7-zip but has a decent interface.0

winrar is good to. deals with zips and rar files. similar plugs in /addons like winzip.0

It is good, but not free.
7-zip is probably the best out of the box free solution. TugZip is good too, although I don't like all the right-click context items it adds by default."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
I use Izarc, as good 7Zip, but much better interface, both are free. check out Izarc at http://www.izarc.org/
