Weekend away?

Can anyone help please? We are planning a weekend away and we are looking at a few hotels in Donegal. We are looking at Carlton Redcastle in Moville, Keys Hotel in Ballybofett, Bayview Hotel Donegal. Has anyone been and can they recommend??? Open to suggestions, not necessarily in the South.

  • Arkonite,

The Redcastle is quite nice....it's on a green field site with a 9 hole golf course attached and a spa facility. Had a Sunday lunch in it a few months ago and it was fantastic. Lovely views and walks around the grounds, and you're quite close to drive around the scenic "Inishowen 100".

Key's Hotel - I haven't been in a few years but have heard fairly good reports also. Bayview I have no experience of.

    Hope that helps!

Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

Don't forget the Euro is at an all time high against sterling (75p approx)

    Maybe look at Fermanagh instead?

I'm a big fan of The Manor House outside Enniskillen. Sometimes they do good weekend break prices.
  • We went to the redcastle about this time last year. It was a lovely hotel and the setting right on the water was magical. BUT it was very child friendly..very very very child friendly. IE kids running around the bar etc yelling until quite late on. The spa part apparently don't take emails so the treatments we had booked by email on their website weren't booked and they had no alternative slots. And the food was just okay but the service was almost comically bad and yet somehow in terms of tone and formality trying to be silver service :) I was also disappointed that there didn't seem to be any actual beach as such...

I have heard amazing things about Harvey's point personally but it is expensive so you'd need to get a good deal. I know if I was heading off this is where I'd want to go. BTW I think their website is wrong about their current special offers. I got a leaflet given to me by a friend who'd stayed there recently and the prices seemed to be well less than those quoted, I'd give them a call and see if you're interested.

Hope you have a great time.
  • I've stayed in both The Redcastle and the Keys and had a meal in Jacksons Ballybofey. The Keys wins handsdown. The Shandon at Dunfanaghy was another good one.

Think youve made the right choice.Lovely hotel great food and friendly staff. Only thing i thought let it down was leisure centre changing rooms which can be a bit grubby.
