is it sacreligious to ask? maybe. but MSE doesn't seem the best place for these sort of business startup questions - but the problem is that it's trustworthy. anyone have suggestions of other sites that can help? would be great to have more info

I would highly recommend you take a look at UK Business Forums, commonly known as UKBF:
http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk
I post on there as DotNetWebs. I have seen the forum grow exponentially over the last few years. During this time I have witnessed many start-ups go on to make a successful business thanks to the guidance of UKBF members.0 -
What about for small charities?

I would recommend UKBF aswell:
https://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk
I post on there also quiet regularly. There is loads of help and advice from many different areas eg. advertising, IT & internet, accounts, legal etc.
They are also a very friendly bunch of people.0 -

Don't know about forums, but if you are a member of NCVO you can ask questions, and there is a lot of useful information there even if you're not. Possibly Third Sector as well - again a lot of information available. Sometimes too much information ... I've just signed up for their daily digest but don't really have time to read it!What about for small charities?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
thanks, i'll give the business forums a try. H0

I'm not business but I am a charity fundraiser. What we do at charities is marketing so it applies to small businesses too.
One concept that helped me when I got started and is really on the MSE street is Guerrilla Marketing. It is about how to communicate with prospective customers without spending much money. The website of the guy who started it is atwww.gmarketing.com - There are other sites as well about the concept.
Businesslink is worth a look at www.businesslink.gov.uk -
The charity equivalent of Businesslink are the Hubs at www.hubs.org.uk
Don't forget the public library -- lot's of books and ask the librarian for other information on starting a business or a charity.
