Broken toe - visit hospital?

I know this may sound a really daft question...but...if you break your toe does the hospital actually do anything?

I just wondered as I'm sitting here with a really bruised toe after knocking it earlier and its still really painful. I didnt think they did anything with broken toes but my oh is saying I should go off to the hospital :(

I've been back and forth to the hospital this week with my daughter and I dont want the hassle/expense of going over there if they're just going to say rest it etc.

Any nurses/docs out there?

Thank you

  • You should probably strap it firmly to the toe next to it (I've had several broken toes over the years).

Keep your foot elevated above your hip too.

no they don't do anything (unless it's your big toe then they might)
  • Thanks Tinkerbell...thats what I thought.

So the hospital never do anything else when you've broken your toe?

I really do have a strong feeling it is...I cant put any weight on it, its swollen and rather blue lol.
  • Thankyou.......I'll just do what is suggested then.

With three visits this week to the hospital..the extra petrol and car parking fees (£2.50 a time) its been an expensive week so I didnt want to go back over this evening if I didnt have to.

Thanks...knew I could rely on fellows msers :)
  • I broke my big toe many years ago, and the hospital put on a bandage the some stuff that hardened the bandage - result was like a mini plaster cast. made it near impossible to have a bath or shower as I wasnt allowed to get it wet, made walking a complete nightmare, and when I went for my check up, the nurse said it would have been fine if I'd just rested it - no need for the wee cast!
    skint but in luv :kisses2:
  • Definitely dont want a cast if I can help it by just resting :(
    thankyou Donna

Last time I did mine they said they 'rarely' do anything to it, maybe bandage it up. Sound like it's only in the worst cases. Hope you feel better soon.

Broke my little toe when I was running away from a moth in the bathroom. Left it overnight as OH thought I was over-reacting then it turned purple and my foot looked like a flipper so went to get it checked next day.

They just told me to strap it to the next one with micropore but they did give me crutches as I had to get round in work and couldn't drive for a week (felt like someone stabbing me in the foot every time I pushed in the clutch)

Which toe is it? The doc I saw said it is very rare to break the pinkie toe (me being the exception to the rule!) as it usually just dislocates then pops back in but still hurts like hell :)
