Toilet cisterns - help please: limescale and mould

I live in a very hard water area and consequently have to buy toilet rim blocks to prevent limescale build up in the toilet itself. I recently used some of the cistern blocks to see if they would be any better.

I found that our two upstairs toilet cisterns have a load of limescale all over the ball !!!! etc and what looks like mould (well it's black) on the sides of the cistern. How do I remove this? There seems no point putting something on the toilet rim if it is being continually filled with limescale-affected water. Some of the limescale has just brushed off, but it looks like something chemical is needed to shift the rest.

Interestingly (or not!) the downstairs toilet has hardly any limescale and no mould at all.....

There is a definite 'ring' around the inside of the cistern that suggests the water level has dropped - is this a concern? One toilet has a bag to limit the flush, one doesn't, but they both have a ring.

Thanks for any help on this topic - I think I am spending too much time indoors to be so fascinated by my toilet cisterns!

    Hi telly-addict,

I know that you are asking about limescale in the cistern rather than the bowl, but some of the suggestions on this thread might help.
