Exterior Wall Painting - Pebbledash - Most Effective Method?

I am currently receiving quotes to paint the exterior of my house. The walls are pebbledash.

I have had two quotes that are comparible in terms of price and what they will do (2 coats, cover patio windows, doors, etc).

The main difference is that one is quoting using a brush, and the other using a roller.

The roller quote is 6 days x 2 people. 12 Days total.
The brush quote is 8.5 days x 4 people. 34 Days total.

As you can see - it will take almost three times longer via brush. I am asking myself if a roller is that effective - why would someone use a brush as they could earn more money using a roller!?

Anyone with experience, hints or tips would be much appreciated. I am mostly concerned with the finish rather than the time to complete the job.

How about getting it sprayed on? Much easier, faster.
  • What does the roller guy say about coverage/quality of finish?

I just can't imagine getting complete coverage with a roller. With a brush, you can "flick" in between all the pebbles and get into all the crevices. Would a roller do as good a job?

it depends on the size of the pebbles , if they are too big the roller will not cover in between the pebble ,
if it is a small pebble then a roller will probably cover ok ,
if it is a larger pebble the a brush / spraying would be better

apologies for the amount of pebbles used in this repy

Decided to go with the brush quote. 4 people vs 2 and brush feels a better finish for me.

I was warned off spraying on pebbledash as I was told pockets of air can get trapped. The guy with the roller said it would be ok - but felt the other quote was better value....

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I agree with nick :D I painted my own semi pebbledash with a roller, a long haired one, that gets into the nooks and crannies.
I also used a big brush for the odd bit that was missed.

How big is your house?, as I have a 3 bed semi, it has existing paint, but I painted the walls myself, admittidly I am a decorator, so while I was up on the scaffold, I undercoated the facia and soffit, pipe, did the cutting in with the emulsion, put a coat on the one side, then went back to the glossing of the facia and soffit.
By that time the first coat was dry, so put on the second coat of colour, then went round to the other side and so on.

I finished the house on my own, including painting the damp course in approx 2-3 days,(had no windows to do), put varnished front door as well, but I did start very early, had really good weather, and worked thru to about 6pm
