Protected no claims bonus query

My dad has asked me to see what he can get his car insurance renewed for using the net. He has had protected no claims with it so his renewal shows the max discount but two years ago with the same company as last he had a claim. Thing is, comparison sites ask how many years ncd have you got and have you had a claim in the past x number of years.
If I enter the max and 2 yrs ago then opt for protected what do they offer max and protected or max reduced by x yrs and protected.?

or maybe I should have put it another way..

Is a protected no claim discount at the max transferable to another company even if the policyholder has had a claim in the last 2 years. Or is it only potected if you stay with the company?

You need to check the renewal notice that he may have received from his current company - what NCB does it say he has ? If it doesnt say then he needs to phone and ask what NCB he has!

If it 5 years plus then you can pay to protect the NCB (some companies will protect on 4 years)

Also make sure you declare the claim.

You can protect the NCB with any company as when you take a 12 month policy you are paying to protect it for the next 12 months.

    Hope this helps

    1)They will protect the max.

2)Yes protected NCB is transferable even if a claim has been made.
