Who owns gas meter?

We are planning a new kitchen and would like to move the gas meter from one of the cupboards to an external meter box. We called British gas for information and they have said we need to find the owner of the meter??. It looks at least 20 years old and has a transco sticker on it but BG say that it is not owned by themselves or transco. We are having building work done extend the kitchen and it would seem the perfect time to move it to a more convenient location. Any thoughts welcomed !!

Good evening: The procedure for gas meter relocation is dependent on where you live in the UK eg. some parts are covered by the National Grid http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Gas/Connections/domestic/
