Not too sure. Could be you've switched on the sticky keys feature. Press shift fives times in succession to switch it off (if it's on)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Try the StickyKeys suggestion above, though for me it doesn't produce your symptoms. If not, in all probability it's a stuck key on the keyboard itself, though there's a possibility it could be the keyboard controller on the motherboard.
Probably the best thing to do is to go to the laptop maker's website, go to the Support/Downloads section and see if there is a diagnostic program for your model. If so, that should be able to narrow it down.
Depending on make and model, replacement keyboards are relatively cheap on Ebay - some are easy to fit, and others are a complete nightmare to do...0 -

Have you tried the sticky keys application? (pressing shift five times)"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

The reason I ask is that I did try the other keyboard idea but my laptop didn't recognize it, although all the system requirements were met. When I tried typing using the new keyboard nothing happened.
I'm not sure whether there was a problem with the keyboard itself or whether I was doing something wrong as I don't have another desktop/laptop to try the keyboard on. I just ended up taking the keyboard back and am now back to square one. Any other suggestions please (other than buying a new laptop as can't afford it at the moment)?? Thanks

Seriously, hope you get it fixed soon! Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.

If the external keyboard had a USB connector, many laptops seem to have "USB keyboard" support turned off by default in the BIOS - so it would be worth checking that.
If it's got a PS/2 connector then it should work ok, but again maybe worth checking to see if it needs to be enabled in the BIOS.0
