My brother has it acutely and acupuncture is the only thing which seems to work. My SIL was shown by the NHS acupucturist how to do it on a course for spouses of severe sufferers! he is a brave man!!!!but she is quite proficient at it now and it frees up the NHS service for other users.

the sciatic nerve on some ppl runs through or very near to the piriformis muscle deep within the gluteus muslces in the butt - if this muscle becomes tight or tense for a vairety of reasons then this will produce pain in the lower back and radiating down the legs
a simple neuromuscular technique for a qualified massage therapist can work wonders on this type of pain
also a set of relevant stretches and strengthening exercises can help

After I had surgery to scrape away the arthritic debris that had built up where the Sciatic nerve passed through part of the spine/pelvis the physio taught me to do an excercise that moved the nerve within the sheath that it runs through , it stretched and moved the nerve taking out the tight/tense feeling that came just before the excrutiating pain and I was able to keep it at bay... I am now 10yrs down the line and have never suffered that excrutiating pain again as long as I do the stretching excercises..

I had acupuncture for it once as I simply could not get out of bed; it seemed to help relieve the symptoms.

Of course treatment is different for each person and it really is about finding out what the underlying cause is.

  • I sympathise with your Mum, I was bed bound for weeks and the pain was immense. It was controlled by morphine which was fantastic and allowed me to be mobile for short bursts throughout the day between doses. The thing that finally freed me of it completley was accupuncture which was done on the NHS at the physios. Hope she feels better soon.

Why don't you try and get help to find out the root cause of your pain and treat the problem rather than the symptoms? please demand help as it's completely unreasonable for you to have to live like this. Good luck.

  • Hi, I don't know if anyone is still viewing this thread but do any of you suffer only when doing certain activities?

I was in a car accident 3 years ago and develop sciatic pain when I go horse-riding, but never at any other time! I've had physio, massage, seen a chiropractor and an osteopath, which have all helped ease the pain short-term but never really solved the problem. I'm waiting for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon and hopefully an MRI.

It's be interesting to know if anyone else has come across this.
  • Hi helensmoney,

I don't seem to suffer during specific activities but it does seem to flare up after certain activities. For instance, if I have to lift some moderately heavy items then the next day it will be painful.

The pain is awful but what really gets me is the restriction of movement it brings about.

it maybe that the position u are in on a horse aggravates the nerve or possible the compression on yr spine

i find that if i sit for too long it aggravates my back and therefore my sciatica

    hope u get it sorted
