Car Hire Advise

Hi all,
Not sure if this is in the right place but:
Apologies in advance for the long post
I have a problem with a car hire company that i used 2 weeks ago in Austria (this is a big company but i wont name names yet), when i picked the car up we were going round the car and i noted some light scratches on the vehicle which i marked down on the sheet, (even though i was told by the rep that these were not chargeable), on returning the vehicle the keys were dropped off (during working hours) and the rep was busy and said he would check the car out later (i think people can see where this is going). Ive now received a invoice for £650 damage that has been paid by the credit card which it was booked with (which isn't mine).
Obviously as this is a credit card the person is just going to do a charge back, but what position does that put me in, am i liable for the damage? - also i want to point out that it also gets a bit more complicated as when we originally booked for 5 days, which i signed, we later found out that the people who were staying for the week needed it so we extended it via email, - now when i look at the paper work they have sent me it states that i signed the car out on the 17th Jan, even though i left Austria on the 15th, so this is a lie!
Any advise would be greatly appreciated
