  • It depends on what you intend to use the computer for?

For writing a letter, surfing etc fine:T

For playing the latest games, video editing - No way!

What do you need to do with it?

You may not want my personal experience of Dell http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=702941

Let people know how you want to use it so that can give valuable feedback.

Vista Premium is pretty hungry so I wouldnt advise going below 2gb so ok on that front.

Dell offers are always renewed with another offer. Never seen a full price one so not sure how that get around the legalities of a 'sale' price.

It'd be fine for video editing. Anything with the C2D architechture will tear through standard def video. a 320GB drive and 2GB of ram are plenty for editing home videos too.

It'd do the trick for pretty much everything except gaming I think. Not familiar with the video card's high def video capability, but I wouldn't expect it to accelerate hd video decoding. You should manage 720p, relying entirely on the processor, but not 1080p. The monitor won't do 1080p without downscaling it anyway, so I wouldn't be too bothered.

But yeah, we'll be able to tell you if it'll do what you need it to if you tell us, but I'm thinking that unless you're looking to play games, it'll be perfect for you.

Does anyone know if these machines have a PCI-e slot for a graphics upgrade?

I just think it would be such a shame to spend money on a decent sounding PC only to find it runs like a dog if someone was to try to play a game on it.

Onboard graphics are fine for simple surfing, Office etc but in 6 Months time you may want more from it.
  • Personal experience:
My partner has a dell (I'm on it now) and I wouldn't buy one for toffee. There are some in their range that are impossible to upgrade later (good point from CHR15) and the printer that came with it is terrible, cartridges are sooooo expensive and last next to no time if you do photos or simple good quality print, if you use refilled cartridges or replica dell cartridges the printer software throws a wobbly and says 'don't think so sunshine' (in so many words or crashes!). We've swapped the printer for my old one now coz the dell one was impossible. For a quick fix cheap bargain go for it. My old computer was a custom build and after 8 years finally got a virus bless it, to the point I couldn't save it. I bought a laptop in Curry's much against my will but honestly couldn't fault it at all for price or service or anything. Vista? I had the option but declined. So much software is incompatible, it's still very new so I'd wait a good more 6 months for a Vista upgrade.

A virus will to all intents and purposes NEVER do anything to your PC that will require a part being replaced, never mind the entire machine being useless.

Hit customise, you can choose from a few pci-e cards. Not sure if the extra price includes a different motherboard too, mind you. If you wanted to be sure you got a pc with a pci-e slot it'd be another £47.
