Is anyone from the Southampton area?

My son is thinking of buying a 2 bed terraced house (around £150K) around the Southampton area. Are there any areas we should avoid and areas that are good to live in?
He is looking to live in a 50 mile radius of Bournemouth, but not go west. I suggested Southampton as it has good links to London.
Many thanks

I am no expert in property but have lived in many types of homes, in many locations and can only talk from experience.

If he needs to be in Bournemouth is that not an option anyway? Most of teh Southampton trains finish up in Bournemouth anyway so links are pretty much teh same just an extra 40 mins or so
a couple of recent threads discussed similar questions
more Southampton specific but took in lots of comments on surrounding areas

He is quite flexible where he can live but he needs to be in a place with good employment prospects and a place with a young social scene - he is nearly 20. He doesn't want to live IN Bournemouth but near there - these are his words not mine.An average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T

likewise unless you head to West Dorset very few sub £150k 2 bed houses, may find a few flats. Prices tend to rise as you go east bar some of the less desireable places. may find the odd one now and again(or maybe more as year progresses)
Does it need to be a house?
Also with regards to living 'near' Bournemouth but not in it, apart from the train it's not the easiest place to get to without driving everywhere i.e. for nights out and that. For someone of his age and the general areas I'd have said it was probably one of the best choices of places to live, plenty of similar people(which also brings prospect of renting a room out to help with costs)0 -
A 20 year old isn't going to want to live on an estate in some peripheral area like Totton or Hedge End.
When I was single in my 20s I bought a then modern 3 bed terrace in a suburb of Southampton but found myself surrounded by young couples with children. With hindsight I would have preferred a more town centre location where there tended to be more singles - or possibly now a university student type area such as Swaythling, St. Denys etc. If he wants a 2 bed house for about £150K he is only going to find them in places like the older areas of Southampton or in the Council estates on the edge that would not be the right scene for a single anyway.
Places like Winchester would be far too expensive.RICHARD WEBSTER
As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.0 -
Southampton is a big uni town with masses of young single teens. Most of them rent a room in a shared house. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

North of Southampton/south of Winchester is a bit cheaper and with easy access to the M27 and southampton. the outskirts of Eastleigh perhaps - the town itself isn't that wonderful. there are lots of young folk around because there is a uni and art college in winchester and of course the main southampton campus. there is good nightlife in southampton (my son just told me) and Winchester is better than it used to be. Loads of restaurants, cheap pubs and bars.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0

Quite frankly buying a 2 bed terrace anywhere in the area is going to be nigh on impossible. If you do find something this cheap it will be for a very good reason, and I would research the area VERY thoroughly. Maybe he could rent a room somewhere first?Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early

Well I know of a decent 3 bed property that went for £165k in Swaythling, North Southampton, near M27 etc in November. Prices are supposed to have cooled since then. Look at the 'better' end of the ex-council properties - anything built before 1970 can be quite good quality.0
