freehold...this is what we told for a property we are supposed to go and view that needs work to it. should they or the solicitor not know this? is there another way to find out?

The owners should definitely know this & it's something a solicitor only investigates once you've instructed him to act for you.
You can find out from the land registry if it's leasehold or freehold, it only costs a few pounds.The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

If it needs work and it's empty (hence I'm assuming the agent knows nothing) It's possible it's a repossession in which case the details may only be with their solicitors.
If you can research the Land Registry then it's time for a possible bargain?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
