A few years ago I used a Laptop with Autoroute & GPS receiver to go from Plymouth to Aberdeen.

I cant recall which version of Autoroute I used but it was before 2006

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-689-00660-Autoroute-2006/dp/B000BH2AE6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1201300350&sr=1-3

Autoroute 2006 only costs 20 quid.

I am not suggesting you use it on the passenger seat and keep looking over (it didn't have voice prompts then but I believe 2007 does)

My passenger used it to guide me.

You can select map options (North Up, Direction up, car scrolling, map scrolling etc)

It would only work with a USB connected GPS receiver though, I can't say I have ever tried with bluetooth but I doubt it would work unless they have redesigned the software.

It draws your route in green when you plan the journey (as normal). It is then up to you to keep on the green line!!

PocketGPS World provides all the information on configuring speed cameras (I found this very useful, you can set audible alarms)

It also records the route you took. I found this a great feature to play with. To see the circles you went in when lost!

To be honest I loved it, much more to play with than TomTom

Heres a cheesy Yutube video of the same type of thing as I had (even an inverter to run the laptop lol!)

EDIT: looking at that video, Autoroute 2006 does support voice prompts!

I tried it with the holux 236, autoroute and a bluetooth adaptor.
Thanks Chris and John for the autoroute suggestion. It appears reasonably priced. Can the Holux236 be connected to the laptop using a normal USB cable (remember reading somewhere that it is only for charging) or does it have to be bluetoothed?
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

What you read is correct the usb port doesnt transmit data it is just for chargeing. bluetooth adaptors are pretty cheap now anyway.
