in Credit cards
Hi
Well it's going to be my first CC and i need a little help. I understand a bit about them and all i want to be able to do is buy my new plasma tv from johon lewis which will cost about £1400.
Ive seen the john lewis partnership card offering 6months free on purchases, and all i want to do is buy the tv and setup a direct debit to pay it off over 6-9 months depending on the card i choose.
One other thing is should i register it to my new address ive moved to, or register the card to my parents address that ive just moved out of. How is my card limit determined as a £1k limit would scew up this tv purchase?
cheers

Expensive TV so soon after moving away from parents!
To answer your query - you should be truthful as possible when applying - so if you have moved away from your parents house the new address should be the one to use. (If not then any TV ordered would only be delivered to the registered address of the cardholder).
There are better cards on the market than the John Lewis one - some offer 12 or 15 month 0% (check that it applies to purchases and not just balance transfers) - check the tab at the top for Martin's guide to credit card newbies and cards on offer.
Normally a card company will give you two options when you set up a direct debit - either minimum payment or full payment.
Obviously full payment will not work for what you propose so you would need to make manual payments in addition every month in order to achieve your goal of paying it off in 6-9 months.0 -
Hehe ye, always wanted one. Well i have enough cash atm but im not starting my new job for a few weeks so rent comes first.
I would prefer not to take too long to pay it off, but anything up to 9 months is fine for me. With regard to getting a credit check to my new address, how will that work, as i haven't even had a bill through yet with my name on it, so there is no way i could even apply for one ?
Im just worried that il get a low limit say £800, then the card will be pointless as i can't buy the tv as it costs a fair whack more. When they do the credit check what can they check with me as i only have an ebay sellers account and mobile phone contract (O2 online and payed for via direct debit).

Most lenders ask for addresses for last 3 years. They won't find you (yet) at your new address but will at your old.
As for credit limits I can say anything as it is in the lap of the gods what you will get.
If it is too small ring them up and explain what you intend to use it for and you may get a higher limit.
If not then reconsider the purchase - a £1400 telly today will probably be under £1k by next Christmas - have another look around what's available which you can afford.0 -

Ah right, the mrs informed me egg or mint are ok, but il go read the stickie and decide. Also rung up the john lewis partnership people and the guy said i could go into a store and get a temporary card sorted out there, as my pricematch vs. another store should be sorted by the middle of next week andi don't really want to wait weeks to have a credit card sorted. If not then reconsider the purchase - a £1400 telly today will probably be under £1k by next Christmas - have another look around what's available which you can afford.Ye, i like the panasonic plasma at £999, but compared to the pioneer it looked pretty poor, and if i got the panasonic i would spend my whole time picking up faults and wondering why i didn't stump up the extra for a tv that actually makes me happy.

Problem is that they keep showing the same old rubbish - no matter how good your telly is!0
