I have a large amount of old and tatty paperbacks and wondered if they would make free fuel for a multi fuel stove has anyone tried this.

Paper tends to clog the fire. You can burn them a few at a time but it makes a lot of ash and you need to prod it endlessly with a poker to separate the pages to get them to burn. I should stick to wood or coal!0

I agree.
I have a multifuel stove and occasionally burn private papers etc. The ash it generates is unbelievable.
If your insistant that your going to do it then make sure your fire is well established before throwing one or two on.
Why not recylce then to your local charity shop, or if you do a web search for a paper brick maker, you might be able to convert them to something that will burn a bit better. They are about £20 from the green shops I seem to recall.
Hope this helps
