Hi 1st post on this board, just wanted to say what really annoys me is if you go out for a meal with a group for a special occassion we always go out with a budget, so we'll get quite cheap items on the menu etc not drink a lot to keep the price down. Then a the end of the night get asked to pay a % of the bill, not what we ordered, which quite often comes to double our actual spend. Then get called tight for only paying for what we ate and Drank.

I find that if you let people know before the meal that you intend to pay for yours seperately then it wouldn't be a problem.

thats why there are so many people in debt. there's so much pressure on people to spend spend spend. We're bombarded with ads for sales and people telling us about tgeir great stuff.

it's hard to say no and keep our heads above water. Just tell 'em, 'yeah, I'm too tight fisted to spend ', that's what I do, and at least everyone knows.

Actually after Africa has been on TV, it's obscene to spend cash unnecassarily, and to get into debt for stuff we don't need. We should all try to live within our means and save save save.

Good luck, and don't let 'em grind you down.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

I just make a big joke about it when people say I am tight. "Yup - every penny's a prisoner" and the like. At least I am not denying my situation and am getting somewhere towards back on my feet. Like you say, it will be nice to be back to being able to splash out more - never feel peer pressured into spending!

I used to worry about what people thought, but thats what lead me to run up the debt in the first place!!! People at work ALWAYS buy lunch out, sometimes I go with them, sometimes I dont - the funny thing is that they buy a salad for £5 and you hear everyone saying "wow, what a bargain, where did you get that etc etc" - you could make a whole week's lunches of salad (if you wish) for that £5.!!!

Im hoping to have a leaving lunch next Wednesday (start my new job next Thursday), and will def be ordering Champagne (since they'll be paying!!!).

Try not to worry about it, they're probably secretly envious because of the amount of ££££ they are wasting!!! Keep at it. They're probably in more debt than you, but at least you are doing the sensible thing - leaving you with more money to spend on the things that are worth it!!!

I agree. I thought this this week.

My Tuppence worth is ...I dont think moneysaving is very trendy. Most people are effectively sheep and if things are not cool, they will join in and take the p***. I am thinking we need Gwyneth Paltrow or someone to start saying yes I changed my electricity last week and isnt 18866 amazing. But on the other hand people dont get rich people being tight (think of the bad press Rod Stewart gets), but I think, "How do you think they got rich in the first place?"

Anyway, to conclude I think the more poeple that do it, will tip the scales to making saving money trendy and then all the sheepy people will go, Oh, I want a bit of that and then we'll all be taking soup to work!
  • Thank you to everyone who replied -- It's just so nice to know that I'm not alone. It's so easy to be tempted when chums suggest a drink (or 3 ) after work or a takeaway on the way home and I do need the support of this site at times! :D

I'm pretty glad I saved my money as my tooth just broke so I'm off to the dentist tomorrow

    See you all soon!

Thats what I do too - I'm not bothered who knows that I'm on a budget cos I'm paying off debts.

I've never been called tight, just been called a bit of a misery when I decline a night out. I'm not bothered though, I'm the one who'll be able to sleep at night with no debt.

    Not my loss!

I agree - when I used to be in debt, I just played up to comments and used to be known as having short arms and long pockets - it was probably easier because I was fairly junior at the time.
