Its none of their business, and Im sure they are only jealous that you are controlled enough not to waste money.

At the end of the day, your lunches may appear to be 'free', but in actual fact the cost of them is factured into your wages. Ultimately, companys provide free lunches as a way of giving staff extra something tomake themselves competitive with other jobs, they are giving you the equivalent of £2.50extra wages a day,but without having to pay all of the associated taxes they would have to pay should they give it to you in money.

So by not having their lunch every day, they are effectively throwing £2.50 away, then a bit more for whatever they are paying to eat!

When somebody calls me a tight git now I take it as a compliment, after all, we're the clever ones by using our money wisely and not letting others (companies and friends that are better off anyway) get wealthy on our hard earned cash!!

    Keep up the good work!

being careful with money is not a bad thing and you should be proud of the fact that you know how to spend what you work dam hard for and get the best deal and not be ripped off - be proud.

you can be generous without spending a penny, be generous with your time, take care to speak to people and ask them about themselves, say thankyou and please, smile, spend time with your friends walking, a picnic etc etc
being "tight" is not about money and those "friends" who think it is are losing out.

I too have people occasionally making comments about me being tight - but at the end of the day I am happier knowing how much money I have saved. Example being - in work, I could spend over £2 on lunch, or alternatively take a tin of soup which costs 53pence!! The way I see it, I got myself into this trouble, so I will get myself out of it! The money I save doesn't sound alot - but 1.50 over 5 days - it's certainly sounds a lot more...
    Gimme back my bank charges!!!!!

To put things in perspective. If you tell some of the regulars on the old style board that you spent 53p on a tin of soup they would fall down dead. ;)

Even better when you get the soup for free for your lunch once the tin is freshly made - good thing for working for baxters :D

53p for a can of soup! Sheesh!

When I was in money saving mode -

    Potatoes/ carrots/ onions from auction (2-5p a pound)
Cases of dented cans of soup from local warehouse, price varied, but < < 53p
Choice of evening meal dictated by what was at "yellow label" tray at supermarket. Actually this was fun, as you never knew what you were going to have to try and make a meal from!
    Mid-day meal at work canteen.
Clothes from Oxfam/ jumble sales/ charity shops (including a pair of shoes - which did freak my parents out when I told them, but they were 4,000 miles away and I was stubbornly determined to ask them for nothing)
    Walked to work
Some of the money saving ideas though were, ahem, not legitimate.

Of course, all money saved was used for going out, but I was 17 on 110 quid salary a week, in London, and determined to have a good time without debts. Was renting too, so after bills worked out at about 50 pounds a week for everything

Was I a tightwad? Yes - but looking back (this was late 80's) it was one of the best years of my life, and the friends I made then, am still friends with Correct, there is a huge amount to do that doesn't mean spending fortune - rather than pub, go on picnic (with booze), take girlfriends on dates to museums etc.
  • Yeah, I hate it also when people don't understand why I am doing this. Especially when it's my OH that slags me off, as the closer you are to people the more it hurts. BUT I then remind myself of a conversation I once had with a friend: Friend:"BQ, you earn more than me and so does your OH, and yet you always say you don't have the money to go out. I always do. Why?" BQ:"....?...."
5 months later..... BQ:"Friend, you know how you always ring me on the mobile? You must be on a good deal to afford that, can you tell me what it is so I can take it out also?" Friend:"I don't know, the bill goes straight to my Mum! And now she is refusing to pay so I am stuck owing all this money! Boohoo!"
Hence lesson is: It isn't always as it seems....

Like BQ says above - "what goes around comes around". They might be calling you tight now, but circumstances change & in 6 weeks/months/years your positions may well be reversed & they are the ones without 2 ha'pennies to rub together (as my Nana would have said) & you are flush. The difference will be that you have experienced that situation & would not stoop so low as to make fun of someone because thay are being careful with their money. Rise above it.
