Mexico or Cuba in October

Hi there,
my boyfriend and I would like to go on a 10day holiday to Mexico or Cuba in October. Our budget is £2000 tops. We are not the types for an all-inclusive resort holiday and rather do a trip off the beaten track.
All I can find online are package holidays. Any ideas where I could have a look?

That's the beginning of the Hurricane Season.
I've been to Jamaica in October and whilst we had a tropical storm (four days of constant but warm pelting rain) Cuba had a full blown hurricane! At least it was free for me! Might not be the best time to go?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
