Lights/wiring query help please

Hi there,

Please don't shout at me cos I know I shouldn't be touching elecs if not qualified but I am in the process of changing my kitchen light fitting to a new one - a procedure that I have done successfully many times before.

However, this one has me flummoxed and I hope one of you great sparky's can advise please :)

Firstly, forgive the terminology if incorrect :o - There are 3 main cables coming out of the ceiling which obviously each have a live red, grn/yel earth and black neutral.

One of the neutral cables had a red sleeving on it, which, if I am correct in saying, is the 'switched' live.

I have connected the cables up to the light fitting as per diagram enclosed with the fitting:

Black from mains - blue in fitting
Earth - Earth
Red from mains - brown in fitting
I connected the 'Switched' live to the brown live in the fitting - Is this incorrect?

The problem I have is that the fitting works fine, but won't switch on or off at the light switch and the lights are permanently on.

I marked all the cables with 1, 2 and 3 as I needed to trim them down a bit and haven't mixed them up at all so can't grasp what I'm missing/doing wrong.

Any advice welcomed :)

This diagram here illustrates how the switched live is connected. i.e. breaks continuity of the live feed to the lamp. Sounds like you need a separate connector block for the lives.

Thanks for the quick response and link.

So have I understood your link correctly in saying that the switched live gets connected to the live on the fitting, and the 'normal' lives from the mains go into a separate block connector and just sort of 'sit' inside the fitting as it were and not get connected to the fitting in any way?

    Thanks again :)

Yes if the fitting does not have a block for the lives i.e. just the normal live, neutral and earth connections.
