Any advice please on getting suite recovered

Hi,
Have been looking round for months to find a new 3 piece suite and can`t find anything I like. Our existing suite is 20 years old nothing wrong with it apart from it looking a little tired. I cost a fortune 20 years ago and whilst thinking it was a lot £2500 then it has been well worth the money. Brilliant frame work, really heavy etc.
I am considering having it re-upholstered have found a nice material. Got a quote about 12 months ago £1400 so suppose its gone up a bit from that now.
The type of suite I could buy for £1400-2000 would`nt be of the same quality and I doubt would last 5-6 years never mind 20.
Would you consider recovering or have you had one done - were you pleased with the results? (only problem I can forsee is the new fire regulations!, would they cause any problems?)
Thanks to anyonce who can offer any advice.

We've just had ours done and we're really pleased with the results. I would recommend our upholsterer but he's a local guy and as we live in Bucks that's not much good to you! Our suite wasn't that old (about 5 years) and was from M&S, but we had the room redecorated inc curtains and the new colour scheme was not in harmony with the country tone of the M&S suite!
To reupholster our suite (sofa, sofa bed, & 1 armchair) cost about £1700 in the colour/fabric we chose (from a hundred or more). We had a quote from John Lewis but this was £2800 and I didn't like the guy who came out to measure up (they subcontract this), also JL had a very limited material range suitable for upholstery. No one will use non FR materials for this work so you needn't worry on that score.
We also had samples from a national firm who advertised in the Observer colour mag called Lynplan
http://www.lynplan.com - we were impressed with their response, large selection of samples and detailed information they supplied to enable you to work out an approx costing, but we decided the local guy seemed a safer bet, as we were able to visit his workshop and see examples of work in hand etc.0 -
Thank you for the replies.
ormus, I looked at Plumbs a little while ago but they don`t do the type of suite that we have (big and floppy if you know what I mean)
lolarentt, glad you were pleased with yours, shame I don`t live in your part of the country. The bloke I am thinking of using is doing 2 Parket Knoll chairs for a friend at the moment so I can wait a few weeks till she gets them back ( I appreciate different style to mine but can see what workmanship and quality overall is like) Regarding the FR stuff, isn`t everything on it meant to be FR - think ours is too old for the stuffing etc to be ok, but then if we was renewing the bits inside then I`d like to hope he would put FR stuff in place of what he takes out. I must check this.
Thanks again for your replies - keep them coming - all advice is really appreciated.0 -
Hi
I Used Plumbs - so that's no use to you... I was glad I had our sofa recovered. It only saved us a small amount of money but it seemes terrible to throw away a good sofa for the sake of some covers -
Good Luck0 -
Whatever you do do not use Plumbs, I bought some covers last year, they never fitted properly, was told they would probably fit better after washing, the guy who fitted them had to use my old chair overs to bulk them up as they were far too big, tried to get them to re fit them tried many times, eventually got a letter saying it was out of guarantee and they wouldnt do aything about it.THINK BEFORE YOU BUY FROM THEM0

We recently had our 12 year old 2x2 seater sofas re-covered for all the same reasons you're speaking about. It cost £1400, and we used a local upholsterer-couldn't be happier with the result0
