Energy saving lightbulbs

Thought i was doing really good for my new kitchen and bathrooms thats just been built i have got all the new lights just been fitted so yesterday i went out and bought all new energy saving lights bulbs for each one.

But now i am annoyed we have gone to fit them all and not one of them fits, they are all the right size etc but the are too large they are meant to be the equivalent to the normal bulb but the candle ones were too long so therefore the light fitting did not do up and the spot light ones sat so far out it looks ridiculas. I am so not happy i have had to take them all back and replace with normal light bulbs. thought i was being so good and energy efficient.

Has anyone else had this problem before?

We've got some which are long. Strange shape, not spiral, but sort of looped. Anyway I think the light they give out is rubbish so only use them in the hallway as the children have the light on all night and they don't seem to blow when there is a power surge. The manufacture of energy saving bulbs takes a lot of energy.
  • they do make smaller still ones, but ive only found them wiht the bayonet fittings so far. ive managed to make my kitchen lights fit the energy saving candle bulbs but i have the same problem in the living room, they are longer than normal candle bulbs so wont fit. its very annoying but hopefully they will cotton on and make them smaller still. its only the last 6months or so ive noticed that they have candle etc now as well as normal.

I saw the smaller ones with screw threads and bayonets, large and small. It was in some insert with the Saturday Sun paper. But it was priced at £20 for 4 with a BOGOF, giving you 8 bulbs for £20. I can't remember the wattage rating.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

During the past 12 months, I've been involved with 60+ people (all ove 60yrs old) moving into new homes. All of these properties had been fitted with long-life lightbulbs. The problems we had finding lampshade/fitments that would be compatible with them! Some of the people have even brought in members of family/electricians to have the lightfittings changed to ordinary ones.

Lampshades that we have eventually found to fit very well indeed are the round paper shades (not even the biggest size). The ones that I've bought are £1.49 each from Asda. These even fit over the largest low-energy bulbs of the 'plug-in type' that we have in our hallways. I think that the round wooden twisted twig style would probably fit as well.

But manufacturers are certainly going to have to get their heads together to make these bulbs to suit modern lightfitments - not everybody wants those white paper shades in their homes!

    :rotfl: :o

Olliebeak - I agree, especially as the Government have set a target that we should all be using energy saving bulbs by 2011 and that the traditional bulbs will be scrapped.

Call your local Energy Efficiency Advice Centre. I work for one and they have a catalog of all the types of low energy light bulbs you can get and where to get them. Tesco's have a good selection.

    The telephone number is 0800 512 012

Megaman have an excellent selection also http://www.megamanuk.com/

Angelraesunshine. Osram are doing normal size spots that use half the energy. I have a free sample on my desk.

There are some LED bulbs coming out now which are wonderful - 12 hours a day every day of the year costs £1 - though they are £10 eachto buy at the mo. Its a very white light, but hopefully they'll expand the range as I've only seen these with bayonet fitting too.

    Catt xx
