Like I said you need to read all the info on Alba Models - they are recognised worldwide as the UK's only independant modelling advice service & watchdog. Established 1995 by Katie Froud, former model and legs of the iconic shot for Pretty Polly Nylons. Working alongside the DTI, Equity, BECTU, child protection services and charities.
It states on that site that some modelling agencies do charge once they take you on their books, and it also states not to hand money over prior to being accepted. It also states down the left hand side which modelling agencies to steer clear of, and the one you mentioned is listed, so I got that bit right!!!!
There are far too many people giving out poor advise and thats why you need to go to the professionals like Alba and see for yourself the facts. I did modelling some 25years ago and yes there were lots of scams then too, there is in every trade, but if you get your info from the people in the know you cant go far wrong.

Hi,I've been modelling fulltime professionally for four years and the first thing i got caught out on was joining models direct. I've even got a model booker friend who rung me when she left and asked me to join her agency (for free) regretting that she was part of the whole thing. Their sole intention is to recruit models and accumulate profits that way. They still legitamatly operate as an agency as a trickle of jobs come in that they allocate, but their main source of income is through models recruitment which means they have 1000's of people on their books. Legitimate agencies will ask for money for their books/webste etc. but it will come off your pay as you work. Alba is a good source, but you end up operating on instinct really. Their websites are always a good measure. One's that have an immediate database of models to browse are usually okay, but again, don't pay money upfront. This sounds a bit pretentious, but there's also naf looking sites out there that you'll notice the models are actually of a low calibre. Again, that usually is a sign of a naf site that will only take your money. So the main rule is, don't pay upfront. Paying for test shoots is okay. Test shoots (this is for adults though) will range from £100-300.Good Luck.0

Thanks she_mac. My daughter applied to join models direct in almost a similar fashion to what you state above. I was contacted by a representative of the agency shortly after that and was told to await registration papers in the post should her application be successful following a panelist review. 2 days after the call, an email to my daughter's inbox arrived telling her she'd been accepted. The paper work arrived in the post similarly to that effect. shortly after. Before signing over the contract I took a look at their website - they had a 3pg long terms & condition in small print. Printed this off to read at leisure before handing over the £126 (3yrly) contract, then thought best to google the agency up. This forum is what so far has come to light and I am glad that I did. I guess its back to the drawing board...0

Like she_mac says no agency reputable agency will ask for money upfront, and what southpaw says is true, the agency take a percentage of your fee, they put you on their books for free. If anyone wants more info please pm me.0

Models Direct is a scam. Seriously, just google their name. This agency charge to you be on their "books" except they don't actually have any clients. You will NOT get paid work with them.
SCAM SCAM SCAM.
(Scam).

Again - don't go near them. I used to model full time and still a little now (slightly different type - glamour), and would never pay an agency to be on their books. They will make money from me getting work, as they take a percentage. To me - a legit agency is one who doesn't charge and wants me on their books because they know they can make money from me. I have also never paid to update my portfolio.0

It's good that I've got here. I was very close to pay Models Direct 59 pounds (the normal rate for 3 years is 128). They made that offer today (about 3 weeks from accepting my daughter). We had some other expenses so I said that I will pay that 128 pounds, but later. And it was a bit strange for me that they changed a fee so I checked some forums and got here... checked Alba as well... I am not going to pay them anything... thank you all
