Battery recalibration

When my laptop was booting up earlier today i was prompted that my batter needed to be recalibrated. I went ahead and the recalibration started- the battery charged to 100% then unplug the ac cable and the battery drained to 0%. It said on the screen to plug in the ac and turn the power on. I did all this and thought ok job done. Now i have just switched on again and prompted by the same battery recalibration screen during booting up- i selected escape and allowed windows to load.
Now have i done this battery recalibration thing wrong or is something up with me lappy/battery?
