Cheap holiday in Paris

Hi, thinking of going to Paris on Eurostar just for a couple of days near the end of April (doesn't need to be a weekend). 2 adults and daughter who is 8. HAVE to go by Eurostar - it's a treat for our daughter.

Want to go as cheaply as possible. Don't know much French and want to be within walking distance of the sights, but also not far from Gard de Nord.

Any ideas? I've got the actual Eurostar prices down to £168 return for all three of us, but obviously that doesn't include hotels, and if I include hotels, they whack the prices up.

Cheers
Forever I will sail towards the horizon with you

Have a look at my post on http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=701419

Even though that post is about Rome, the principle for getting the best prices still applies.

  • Have you tried Eurostar's own breaks with hotels?

An alternative is Leisure Direction - it has just quoted me £263 for 2 adults and 1 child for 2 nights at the end of April at a hotel outside the centre and on cheapest trains, £297 for 3 nights. They do have hotels closer to the centre but will be more expensive.

Our son is staying in the Place de la Republique area on a school trip. Here is his hotel which has triples for under 100 Euros per night.

Place de la Republique is a cheap area as is Gare du Nord - you could just google by areas. I don't think you'll manage to find a triple for anything less than 60 Euros per night. Try googling " gare nord hotel chambre triple" or just "hotel paris chambre triple".

You could also try a website such as venere . I just found a 1 star hotel near the Sacre-Coeur basilica with a triple room for 60 Euros a night on there called "Hotel de la Terrace".

There is also the option of chain hotels but they are mainly on the outskirts of Paris. The Etap hotels of the Accor chain are similar to the Premiere Classe of the Envergure chain - double bed with high singe bed above and minute sized shower room, breakfast as an option.

The cheapest way of holidaying - if you are brave (ish) is to swap your accommodation wherever you are for somewhere to kip in Paris. We did this last March and had the best holiday ever! A week right by the Bastille in a fully equipped flat and the money saved was spent on enjoying ourselves. It does involve a bit of work tidying your place and writing a household manual but well worth the effort. Solves the problem of peak prices when you are tied to school hols:rotfl:

I wouldn't worry about travelling around Paris. You'll find the metro really easy to navigate. We've been for a week during the last two school summer holidays and by no means speak much French but have never had any problems. We were also on a budget and stayed here and found it to be comfortable and a short walk from a metro station and not many stops from the sights.

Good luck on doing paris cheap! Im sure you can get eurostar cheaper, try changing the days and the hour you go, the least popular trains will have the cheaper prices or offer you food or a free upgrade.

Search onine for things to do in paris for free - there is alot! A site is dedicated to it somewhere, have a google. Also, your child will get in alot cheaper to places. Check out the louvre, dont quote me but i think sundays you can get in free, and if not you can go after a certain time for less.

Tip: Dont get coke or soft drinks! When we went to the sacre couer to eat it cost 14 euros for two cokes. Way expensive.

Me and the boyfriend went last year and it cost us about £1000 for 4 days. Although we did go to the moulin rouge which was expensive (but in my opinion worth it and the highlight of the trip, gotta do it once in your life.) Youc an do it cheaper though. Have a good time
  • i went to paris in october and can recommend the montpensier hotel (cheap and cheerful, fantastic location and soooo cheap - it is about 2 mins away from the louvre)...

i also recommend the '' l'opentour bus '' which is hop on/hop off, a very cheap way to get around - however the metro is also extremely reasonable, i used it to get to the eiffel tower before the crowds...

    enjoy!
